LANsurveyor automatically discovers the variety of devices on your network and produces comprehensive, easy-to-view network maps that can then be exported into Microsoft Office Visio. Upgrading and Installing. Refer to Upgrade LANsurveyor and Install LANsurveyor in the SolarWinds LANsurveyor Administrator Guide for information about upgrading and installing LANsurveyor. As with all modifications to your production environment, it is suggested that you complete the following tasks before implementing any changes. Back up your database if you are using the Repository. Test the change in a lab environment that mimics your production environment. If you need a temporary license to install an instance of the software in a lab, please download an evaluation copy of the latest software from our website. Evaluation copies come with a 21-day license that has certain limitations. New Features. LANsurveyor version 10.4 offers the following new features and improvements. Many icons have been updated to make them more intuitive and easier to use. A new Getting Started with LANsurveyor screen has been added to help new users get started quickly using LANsurveyor. Support has been added for exporting maps to Visio 2007 and 2010. Two properties have been added to help control map spacing for drawing maps. The Node Properties dialog box now allows you to specify that the node is locked. If the Locked option is checked, the name will not be changed during rescan or Continuous Scan. Why Install LANsurveyor. In addition to the new features available with this release, LANsurveyor provides the following network mapping and monitoring features. Supports the latest platforms Includes support for Windows 7, Windows 2008, and Windows 2008 R2. Realtime Updates with Continuous Scan Using a LANsurveyor diagram as a baseline, Continuous Scan automatically updates maps and the associated topology database with newly discovered devices. This allows you to maintain a constantly-accurate representation of your enterprise for meeting your visibility, troubleshooting, and compliance requirements. SNMPv2c, SNMPv3, Active Directory, and Other Discovery Options Automated discovery options include support for SNMPv2c, SNMPv3, Active Directory Domain Controllers, and multiple, disconnected network ranges on a single network map. Automated and Enhanced Visio Diagram Generation LANsurveyor automatically generates up-to-date, time-stamped Visio diagrams that reflect your current infrastructure. In addition, LANsurveyor maps use SmartShapes in Visio to store node information within the Visio diagram itself. SmartShapes also enable integration with other software, including Microsoft Excel. Updated User Interface Multiple user interface enhancements combine to make LANsurveyor even easier to use. Topology diagrams have been improved to include a new Map Filter interface for displaying desired device groups, new icons, customized map information displays and more. Enabling LANsurveyor Responder Clients. LANsurveyor Responder Clients are provided with your licensed copy of LANsurveyor 10.4, so you do not need to download any additional software. LANsurveyor Responder Client licenses must be purchased separately from your LANsurveyor 10.4 license, but you do not need to download any additional software. Please contact to purchase a license if you do not already have one. The following procedure enables your licensed LANsurveyor Responder Clients. To enable new or existing LANsurveyor Responder Clients. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds LANsurveyor > LANsurveyor. Click Window > License Manager. Enter the license number in the Add License field. Click Add License. See Install Responder Clients in the SolarWinds LANsurveyor Administrator Guide for information about installing LANsurveyor Responder Clients. Updating Maps in LANsurveyor. LANsurveyor allows you to maintain continuously updated maps of your network. With the Continuous Scan feature, you can configure LANsurveyor to continuously update the status of devices on your network map. See Continuous Scan Intrusion Detection in the SolarWinds LANsurveyor Administrator Guide for details. Note: The Rescan Map command ( Tools > Rescan Map ) does not perform the same function as the Continuous Scan feature in LANsurveyor. The Rescan Map function simply scans your network again, using your original settings, so new discovery data is not continuously updated, as it is with the Continuous Scan feature. See Rescan a Map in the SolarWinds LANsurveyor Administrator Guide for details. Configuring LANsurveyor for Windows Vista/7/2008. The Windows Vista/7/2008 firewall blocks ICMP ping replies by default, preventing LANsurveyor from performing network discovery using ping . To correct the situation, either adminstratively turn off the Vista/7/2008 firewall or add a rule permitting ping replies through the firewall. See Configure LANsurveyor for Windows Vista/7/2008 in the SolarWinds LANsurveyor Administrator Guide for the procedure to add the ping rule. Fixed Issues in this Release. The following issues are fixed in this release of LANsurveyor. Map spacing now works properly in Symmetrical view. The Node Properties dialog box now allows you to specify that the node is locked so that its name cannot be changed during rescan or Continuous Scan. Switch port labels are now displayed correctly, including labels for stacked switches. You now have the option to use port description or port index for the port label. LANsurveyor no longer crashes with white screen when running using Continuous Scan with Autosave option. LANsurveyor now crashes less due to threat list file being corrupted. LANsurveyor now supports custom reports with node names. Switch port mapping report has now been fixed in the evaluation version. Customized Report is now up to date after rerun. Fixed the option "Redraw map when new nodes are discovered. More correct connections to switches are now shown. Fixed issue that caused swapping of connections among switches with similar MAC addresses (same first 5 bytes in the addresses. Fixed issue that LANsurveyor Setup Wizard window was missing information after performing a repair. New option "Redraw the map on levels change" was added to control whether maps are redrawn on level changes. Command "Manage > Launch an Application" to launch an application on a Responder node has been fixed. Issue that LANsurveyor crashes after discovery has been fixed. Release History. Previous releases of LANsurveyor include the following fixes and additions. Version 10.3. If SNMPv3 Options are used for creating maps, passwords shorter than 8 characters are now accepted. More than 10 SNMP community strings are now supported in discovery of SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c devices. MIB walks are no longer terminated prematurely if an empty response is received. Sorting the Threat List no longer causes a crash. Version 10.2. Files saved using Continuous Scan Autosave no longer include extra file extensions or timestamps when the AutoOpen feature is enabled. Maps exported to Microsoft Visio now correctly label Ethernet switch ports. The user interface has been modified to improve usability. Known LANsurveyor Issues. The following are known LANsurveyor issues. Support has been removed for Windows 2000 and XP. Support has been removed for the following clients: Dantz Retrospect, Timbuktu, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), Symantec Netrecon, and Qualys QualysGuard. If you are running LANsurveyor as a service on Windows Vista/7/2008, Windows will not display the LANsurveyor user interface. If you are running LANsurveyor on Windows Vista/7/2008, "net send" alerts are not available. Known Responder Issues. Some of the most advanced features of LANsurveyor rely on the presence of a LANsurveyor Responder Client on each and every Windows, Linux, or Mac OS cmoputer on your network. Windows 2000/XP/2003 Startup Items return all NT Services and their status instead of version. The Process type is always Application for all running processes. Data returned by a LANsurveyor Responder Client on an OS X device may be incorrect or limited, as detailed in the following. The Process time and size are always zero. SCSI devices are never returned. Note: The LANsurveyor Responder Client for OS X versions before OS X 10.3.9 is only active when a user is logged-in to the OS X computer.
