The gameplay in Need for Speed: Carbon is most like that of Most Wanted and Underground 2 because they focus on racing in the streets. The major difference in Need for Speed: Carbon is that the street racing includes more groups of racers instead of single drivers. Players are in charge of finding racers to join their crew. Players find street racers that have special skills in Need for Speed: Carbon. Each driver will have two significant skills. One of the skills is going to be involved with racing, such as scouting, blocking, or drafting. The second skill doesn't directly involve racing but it will help the crew during races. These skills include being able to fix cars, having knowledge about car mechanics, and a skill of fabrication. Skills allow drivers to have different abilities. Some of them can take the police out of the area and others can locate shortcuts around the map. Need for Speed: Carbon features three classes of cars; tuners, muscles, and exotic cars. Career mode in Need for Speed: Carbon involves completing races to earn money. If the player wins a race they'll earn $500 in-game cash. This money can be used to purchase new cars and upgrades for already owned cars. Victories also result in bonus locations to be unlocked on the Need for Speed: Carbon maps. There is no basic drag racing in Need for Speed: Carbon, but there is a race make for drifting. The other race modes include sprint, circuit, and checkpoint. These race modes were also seen in the previous two Need for Speeds. Need for Speed: Carbon also focuses a lot on the canyons around the world. There are four types of canyons; canyon duel, canyon sprint, canyon checkpoint, and canyon drift. These different canyons all host the different types of races. The canyon duels in Need for Speed: Carbon are split up into two parts. The first part of the race has the player and another driver. They'll drive around the track and the players goal is to speed up and be as close to the opponent as possible. The closer they are in distance, the more points the player earns. The second part of the race will feature the same concept except the player and driver switch roles. Now as the other driver gets closer to the player, the more points he will lose.
